Bank of America joins companies paying for employee travel for abortions, reports say
Bank of America joined a growing list of companies saying they will pay for employees to travel out of state for abortions after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, according to media reports.
In a memo issued to employees on Friday, according to AdvisorHub, the company headquartered in Charlotte said it would reimburse travel expenses for “reproductive health care.” The new policy is to take effect July 1, according to reports.
“This step is fully consistent with our long-term, well-established approach to ensuring our benefits programs align and respond to the broad-ranging healthcare needs of our employees and their families,” the memo reportedly said.
Bank of America is one of Charlotte’s largest employers, with about 16,000 workers in the city.
Other major financial institutions in the United States, including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, also have said they will cover travel expenses for abortion.
According to The New York Times, Bank of America said: “We have expanded the list of medical treatments that are eligible for travel expense reimbursement. This list will now include cancer treatment, organ transplants at centers of excellence, reproductive health care including abortion, and hospital admissions for mental health conditions.”
