Revolutionary War battles to come to life at Brattonsville
The Battle of Huck’s Defeat, the American Revolutionary War re-enactment at Historic Brattonsville, tells the story of Capt. Christian Huck, a Loyalist officer noted for his “particular dislike for the Scotch-Irish Presbyterians in the South Carolina backcountry or ‘rebels’ as the British called them.”
The re-enactments will unfold 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday. The New Acquisition Militia, Helyar’s Company of the 7th and the 64th Regiment of Foot will bring this pivotal American Revolutionary skirmish to life. Last year, more than 1,300 attended the re-enactments.
The two-day event will feature two battle re-enactments scheduled for Saturday with the Stallings/Williams Battle at 11 a.m. and the Battle of Huck’s Defeat at 2 p.m., with the Battle of Hanging Rock at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Other activities will include a uniform lecture, kid’s militia drill and 18th-century music and dancing. The Col. William Bratton Chapter of the South Carolina Society of the Sons of the American Revolution will present a memorial wreath-laying ceremony at noon Saturday.
An 18th-century worship service will be 11 a.m. Sunday in the Oak Grove. Sutlers, civilian merchants who sell provisions to an army in the field, will be selling period wares on the grounds. An ice cream vendor will be on site. The gift shop will be open. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase from the Friends of Historic Brattonsville.
Open throughout the year, the interpretive battlefield trail project tells the story of the people of the Carolina Backcountry and their part in the American Revolution. The battlefield trail opened during last year’s re-enactment. Historic Brattonsville is located at 1444 Brattonsville Road, McConnells.
Admission: adults, $8; seniors, $6; ages 4-17, $4 and free for age 3 and younger and Culture & Heritage Museum members.
