Church helps firefighters after I-77 crash in Chester County
Not only did police and fire crews respond to a multi-vehicle wreck on Interstate 77 in rural Chester County Saturday afternoon, but volunteers from a nearby church helped the victims escape the near 100-degree heat. .
The wreck happened after 12:30 p.m. near the 68 mile marker of southbound I-77, just south of the York County line. The S.C. Highway patrol and the Richburg Volunteer Fire Department responded.
Several vehicles were involved, said John Agee, Richburg fire chief. Even though no one was hurt badly enough to take to a hospital, the heat for more than a dozen victims was brutal.
Agee called on nearby Edgemoor Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, which sent its activity bus to pick up the people from the wreck scene. The bus took the families to the Richburg station where there was air conditioning, water, and cooling stations.
“It was just so hot out there, we wanted to get all those people out of that heat,” Agee said. “The people of Chester County - you never have to ask twice for help. They come right away.”
