One dead, five injured after head-on crash in Fort Mill, police say

One person has died and five others were injured after a head-on crash Tuesday afternoon in Fort Mill, officials said Wednesday.

The collision involving a car and a van happened on Tom Hall Street east of downtown, Fort Mill police Capt. Steven Bivins said Wednesday.

The driver of a Ford Fusion, a man who was the car’s sole occupant, crossed into a lane of oncoming traffic while heading west on S.C. 160. He hit a Honda Odyssey traveling east.

The driver of the Ford Fusion died later at a hospital, officials said.

Five people in the van had minor injuries, according to a police statement.

The name of the person killed has not yet been released by the York County Coroner’s Office. Police have not provided additional details about the circumstances of the wreck.

Tom Hall Street, part of S.C. 160, is the main east/west connector that bisects the town. The wreck happened near Ashbrooke Drive and shut down traffic on Tom Hall Street for about two hours.

The road fatality is the first in York County in 2023. In 2022, there were 28 fatalities on York County highways, according to the S.C. Department of Public Safety.
