Wreck on I-77 in Chester County sends 2 riding motorcycle, 1 in car to hospital

A wreck on Interstate 77 on Sunday afternoon required two people to be flown from the scene by two separate helicopters, and a third person to be transported by ambulance.

Two people were traveling southbound on a 2007 Suzuki motorcycle near the 65-mile marker in Chester County when they were struck from behind by a 2009 Toyota around 4:30 p.m.

Both riders were thrown from the bike and “entrapped” by the vehicle, according to Lance Cpl. Tony Keller with S.C. Highway Patrol. Neither was wearing a helmet.

First responders on the scene called for two helicopters to come to the scene to transport the two to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. One patient required transport to a burn center because of injuries sustained in the wreck, said Chester County Emergency Management Director Eddie Murphy.

The motorcycle was being ridden by a 37-year-old Rock Hill man with a 39-year-old Edgemoor woman as a passenger on the bike. The Toyota that struck the motorcycle was driven by a 35-year-old man from Huntington, W.Va. The driver was also injured and taken by ambulance to Piedmont Medical Center.

The incident remains under investigation by Highway Patrol. No charges have been filed as of Sunday evening.
