Child, 12, dies after hit by car crossing street in Rock Hill, police say

A child died after being struck by a car while crossing a Rock Hill road near Interstate 77, officials said.

A Mecklenburg County medical examiner told Rock Hill Police Department officials over the weekend the child, age 12, passed away, said Lt. Michael Chavis. The child was airlifted by helicopter to a Charlotte hospital following the crash late Thursday.

The child has not been identified by the North Carolina medical examiner or the York County Coroner’s Office in South Carolina where the collision happened.

The child was outside a crosswalk at the intersection of Celanese Road and Riverview Road west of I-77 when struck by a car, Rock Hill police said in a statement

No charges were filed in the collision, police said.
