Rock Hill Herald Winter Sports’ Athletes of the Week
Ayona Alexander, Andrew Jackson Girls’ Basketball: The 5-foot-11 freshman scored 27 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, four steals and four blocks in a 64-33 win over Cheraw, Jan. 17.
Alexander is averaging 18.6 points, 12.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.9 steals and 1.6 blocks per game for an Andrew Jackson team (13-5) that has won eight straight games.
Do’Nashia Caldwell, Great Falls’ Girls Basketball: The Red Devils’ senior forward scored eight points and seven rebounds in an 84-10 win over Midlands’ STEM Charter, Jan. 17.
Caldwell scored 13 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks in a 30-21 win over Lewisville, Jan. 20.
Caldwell is averaging 11.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game for Great Falls (3-12) this season.
Ja’Niya Cunningham, Northwestern Girls’ Basketball: The 6-foot-1, eighth-grader scored 11 points, grabbed six rebounds and had four assists in a 46-20 win over York, Jan. 17.
Cunningham also scored 14 points and had five rebounds in an 82-47 loss at South Pointe, Jan. 20.
Northwestern is 5-11 overall this season.
Zyan Hager, Catawba Ridge Basketball: The 6-foot-1 junior scored 21 points in a 64-59 win at Indian Land, Jan. 20.
Hager also had 14 points in a 65-61 loss to Lancaster, Jan. 17.
Hager is averaging 18.8 points per game for Catawba Ridge (16-4) this season.
Quentin Houston, Rock Hill Basketball: The 6-foot-1 senior scored 26 points in a 60-50 loss at Nation Ford, Jan. 17.
Houston also had 10 points in a 43-38 victory over Blythewood, Jan. 20.
Houston is averaging 13 points, two assists and two steals for Rock Hill (13-4) this season.
Katie Reed, Rock Hill Basketball: The 5-foot-10 junior averaged 6.6 points, 12.3 rebounds and two blocks per game as Rock Hill won at Nation Ford (53-32, Jan. 17) and over River Bluff (71-21, Sept. 18) and over Blythewood (62-40, Jan. 20).
Reed is averaging 9.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game for Rock Hill (13-5) this season.
Gabriel Tooper, Fort Mill Basketball: The 6-foot-5 senior scored 12 points, had three rebounds, four assists and two steals in a 70-37 win over Spring Valley, Jan. 17.
Tooper had nine points, seven rebounds, three blocks and one assist in a 53-50 win over Clover, Jan. 20.
Tooper is averaging 12 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists per game for Fort Mill (9-10) this season.
Marcia Watt, Clover Girls’ Basketball: The 5-foot-6 junior scored 11 points, including three, three pointers, three assists and one steal in a 42-36 win at Blythewood, Jan. 17.
Watt also scored seven points, had five rebounds, three steals and two assists in a 55-45 victory at Fort Mill, Jan. 20.
Watt is averaging 6.3 points, 1.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.1 steals per game for Clover (14-3) this season.
