York County’s population continues to grow. Yet it hasn’t always been concentrated in the same places.
The Herald went back and reviewed federal census data for each decennial version since 1870. It shows where, and when, the people lived for generations. This visualization shows that change in time.
Places listed here are shown as they were on census reports. They don’t include counts for the Catawba Indian Nation which were often inconsistent or left out of census reports. It also keeps the first names listed for an area throughout, so unincorporated Fort Mill stays Fort Mill Township and unincorporated Rock Hill stays Rock Hill Division.
Included are all listed cities, towns and minor civil division — populated unincorporated areas — that appear in the census records.
