A teenager climbed inside a mechanical game at Carowinds on Sunday afternoon, according to a statement from the amusement park.

The teen climbed inside the claw machine, which is an arcade game with a mechanical crane claw used to grab prizes.

The male, age 13, was in the Cosmic XL Bonus Game in the Thrill Zone section of the park for about 17 minutes, according to a written statement from Courtney Weber, spokesperson for Carowinds.

Carowinds’ medical response team went to the game when park officials learned that the teen was inside, Weber said. The teen exited the machine at 2:11 p.m. after Carowinds officials were alerted at 1:54 p.m., Weber said.

“He was treated and released from first aid and released to his guardian,” the Carowinds statement said. “The safety and security of our guests and associates is Carowinds’ top priority.”

The park announced earlier this month it is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
