Driver dies at Charlotte hospital after SC SUV crash west of Lake Wylie, trooper says

A driver who went off the road Sunday in a York County crash died at a Charlotte hospital, officials said.

The wreck happened after 2:30 a.m. on S.C. 55 near Clover, west of Lake Wylie, said Lance Cpl. Lena Butler of the S.C. Highway Patrol. The driver was alone in a 1997 Chevrolet SUV that went off the road and hit an embankment, Butler said.

A helicopter airlifted the driver to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte where the driver later died, Butler said.

The York County Coroner’s Office has not yet identified the driver.

The highway patrol and coroner are investigating the collision.

The fatality is the 26th on York County roads in 2023, according to S.C. Department of Public Safety statistics.
