A Rock Hill road will close to traffic this month. Here’s how to get around it
A large section of Riverview Road will close for a week, forcing drivers to find an alternate route in Rock Hill.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation hired United Blythe Joint Venture to do the work. It will close Riverview between Cherry Road and Eden Terrace. That half-mile southern stretch is a little longer than the middle piece of Riverview, from Cherry to Celanese Road, or the small northern stretch into residential areas near the Catawba River.
The southern portion will close at 7 p.m. on April 23. The scheduled reopening is April 30.
Cherry, Eden Terrace and Anderson Road are the detour routes. Properties along the impacted area include hotels, fast food, auto shops and other businesses. It’s also a common cut through between the busy Cherry Road corridor and downtown or Dave Lyle Boulevard retail areas as Riverview parallels Interstate 77.
In 2011, York County voters approved a Pennies for Progress referendum that included Riverview Road widening. The ballot had widening from Eden Terrace to Celanese at almost $7.9 million. It’s under construction now at an estimated $23 million.
The only state traffic count figure for Riverview Road is between Celanese and Cherry. It shows 4,600 vehicles travel it daily. Spots just around where the work will close Riverview range from 8,000 vehicles on Eden Terrace to 32,300 on Cherry and 47,400 on Celanese.
