SC man dies after being injured at industrial business in Lancaster County

South Carolina workplace safety officials are investigating a man’s death after he was injured at an industrial business Thursday afternoon in Lancaster County, according to officials.

Kennyatta Abrams, 47, of Lancaster, died at Medical University of South Carolina Hospital-Lancaster after the incident around 4 p.m, a statement from Lancaster County Coroner Karla Knight-Deese said.

The incident happened at Chief Buildings, 992 Quality Drive, Lancaster, according to an emailed statement to The Herald from a spokesperson for the S.C. Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. That agency administers South Carolina’s division of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA.)

All work fatalities must be reported to OSHA, according to state officials.

Chief Buildings opened its Lancaster plant in 2022, according to the company website and past coverage in The Herald. The company makes metal buildings.

Chief Industries, the parent company of Chief Buildings, released a statement about the incident Friday afternoon.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a member of our Chief family who was involved in a fatal accident at our facility in Lancaster, South Carolina,” the statement said. “His dedication and commitment to the team will be greatly missed by all of us. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. We appreciate the support of our stakeholders during this difficult time.”
