A 15-year-old rising sophomore at Rock Hill High School died Thursday night when a car driving on the wrong side of the road struck the golf cart she was riding in, police, school and coroner officials said.

The crash happened around 10 p.m. on Laurel Creek Drive in Rock Hill, police said. The golf cart had six people in it when it flipped after colliding with a Honda CRV, according to a statement from the Rock Hill Police Department. Three others in the golf cart were taken to a hospital after being hurt, police said.

Marlie Sullivan of Rock Hill died at the scene, York County Coroner Sabrina Gast said Friday afternoon in a written release. Sullivan would have been going into the 10th grade at Rock Hill High, said Lindsay Machak, spokesperson for the Rock Hill school district.

Counselors will be available for students and staff Monday at the school, Machak said.

The school district has three high schools. The district is on summer break and schools were closed Friday, Machak said. Students are set to return to school Aug. 8.

Crash still under investigation

Police said the golf cart was traveling north when the southbound Honda traveling in the wrong lane collided with the golf cart, according to Lt. Michael Chavis and a written statement.

The identities and ages of those who were injured have not been released.

The area is north of Celanese Road in a residential area between India Hook Road and Twin Lakes Road.

Police declined to release more details Friday because the investigation remains ongoing.
