A death investigation remains ongoing in Rock Hill after officers found a woman dead over the weekend after checking on her welfare, police said.

Officers found the 53-year-old woman dead in a Cauthen Street home Saturday, said Rock Hill Police Department Lt. Michael Chavis.

Detectives and forensics were called after responding officers saw the woman “may have been assaulted,” according to a police statement.

Police and the York County Coroner’s Office have not yet identified the woman.

Police found the woman after a contractor arrived at the house to let police in. Officers have not said how long the woman is believed to have been dead before she was found.

Autopsy results are pending, Chavis said.

No other information has been released.
