There is nothing like a real Christmas tree over the holidays.

But now that Santa has come and gone, that tree will have to go soon, too.

In York County, residents can drop off that tree for free. Even better, the real tree will be recycled.

Real Christmas trees can be dropped off at any of the county’s 16 recycling centers through the end of January during normal operating hours, said Alysen Woodruff of the public works department and Keep York County Beautiful.

All ornaments, lights and decorations must be off the tree. Each center has a spot where the trees can be dropped off.

The county grinds the trees into mulch.

Those old Christmas lights that don’t work anymore can also be taken to the centers for recycling, Woodruff said.

Residents can go to any convenience center. For a list of all 16 centers to find the one closest to you and hours of operation, visit York County’s website. Centers are closed Wednesdays and Sundays and on holidays. Centers are closed Jan. 1.

The centers also accept other recyclables all year long, including cardboard, boxes and wrapping paper.
