Man dies after weekend Rock Hill fire. It’s the third fire death in the city in two days.
A 40-year-old South Carolina man died over the weekend after a fire at an apartment building in Rock Hill. It was the third death following a fire in two days in the city, officials said.
There is no suspicion of foul play after the fire Saturday on Stewart Avenue, said Ben Grant, battalion chief for the Rock Hill Fire Department.
Eba Gilmore, 40, died at Piedmont Medical Center, according to the York County Coroner’s Office.
Stewart Avenue is near Winthrop University.
Firefighters responded around 12:30 a.m. and found the man inside one of the apartments, Grant said. The fire started in the apartment’s kitchen, Grant said.
No one else was hurt in the building, Grant said. The building had working smoke detectors and people in two other apartments got out safely, Grant said.
A 63-year-old man and his 9-year-old daughter were found dead in a Deas Street home Friday morning after a fire in an unrelated incident. Rock Hill officials said that fire also did not involve foul play.
Autopsies remain pending for the victims in both fires.
Both fires remain under investigation by the fire department, Rock Hill police, coroner, State Law Enforcement Division, and the S.C. Fire Marshal, Grant said.
