Fatalities on two of York County’s busiest roads. I-77 crash involved a deer.

Two people have died after separate crashes on a pair of York County’s busiest roads on successive days, including one fatality after a vehicle hit a deer on Interstate 77 Tuesday, officials said.

The other fatal wreck was on S.C. 5, a main route between Rock Hill and York. Both crashes caused traffic delays as emergency crews investigated and cleared the scenes.

The driver of a Nissan SUV died Tuesday after striking a deer on I-77 southbound near Exit 82 after 10:30 a.m., according to Master Trooper Brandon Bolt of the S.C. Highway Patrol. The vehicle went off the right side of the highway then went back over the interstate to the left before hitting the median wall, Bolt said.

The driver was the only person in the SUV. The identity of the person who died has not yet been released by the York County Coroner’s Office.

I-77 between the North Carolina state line through Fort Mill to Rock Hill includes South Carolina’s most heavily traveled stretch of road, S.C. Department of Transportation figures show. More than 119,000 vehicles use the stretch between Exit 82 at Celanese Road and Exit 83 at Sutton Road per day. Two lanes the highway were temporarily closed Tuesday.

In an unrelated fatality Monday afternoon after 2 p.m., a Rock Hill woman died after her 2017 Honda sedan went off S.C. 5 and hit a tree between Rock Hill and York, troopers and the coroner said. Na’Tarsha Parks, 53, died at the scene, according to the coroner.
