Hackers target Catawba Two Kings Casino, threaten to release blueprints

Hackers are threatening to release blueprints of the Catawba Nation’s Two Kings Casino, including details on restricted areas like chip vault locations and surveillance camera placement.

Cybercriminal gang Anubis posted a ransom threat on its dark website on Wednesday with a timer counting down until its public release, Cybernews first reported. Outlets that cover cyber issues offered conflicting reports on when those documents will allegedly be released.

The Herald was unable to verify the timeline, but casino leaders said they are handling the situation.

Trent Troxel, vice president of the Catawba Nation Gaming Authority, which oversees the casino, said the documents in question are outdated and involve previous design and construction plans.

Two Kings Casino is working with outside cybersecurity consultants to investigate.

“Although our investigation is ongoing, there is no indication that our network, operations or customer data have been impacted or that this information was obtained via the Catawba Two Kings Casino network,” Troxel said in a statement. “We take the security of customer data very seriously and will continue to diligently investigate.”

The Catawba Nation is not aware of any documents released as of Thursday.

The Catawba Indian Nation has approximately 3,300 citizens and is based on a reservation near Rock Hill. The tribe opened a temporary, single-level casino in Kings Mountain in 2021 and is constructing a permanent $700 million facility that’s projected to open its first phase in early 2026.

The new facility is the one being targeted by hackers, Troxel said.
