Search for missing Lake Wylie swimmer now recovery effort
The search for a possible Lake Wylie drowning victim has turned into a recovery effort, authorities said Monday afternoon.
A drowning call came in just before 3 p.m. at Windjammer Park in Tega Cay. People were swimming and an 18-year-old male didn’t come up.
The search was temporarily called off Monday night because of the threat of inclement weather, said Maj. David Nelson, a Tega Cay Police spokesman. The search is expected to resume Tuesday morning.
It appears the teen tried to swim out to an island off Windjammer Park and went under strong current.
If confirmed, this would be the fifth drowning on Lake Wylie since June.
Nelson said Monday afternoon that first responders were handling a “possible drowning.”
“All resources are being made available for assistance,” he said.
The York County Sheriff’s Officesent its dive team and lake patrol to assist, a spokesman said. A call to the S.C. Department of Natural Resources wasn’t immediately returned.
Windjammer Park is one of the only access spots on Lake Wylie for public swimming. The park has a beach, playground and picnic area.
