York County forced Silfab Solar to halt construction on its Fort Mill facility after investigators found employees on the premises who were not permitted to be there.

The county sent a fire marshal and building inspector to the Silfab site Monday night after receiving a complaint, county spokesman Greg Suskin said. Silfab has several construction permits but does not yet have a certificate of occupancy since construction is ongoing.

York County issued a stop work order because investigators found employees who were not involved in permitted construction, which is a work violation.

The stop work order is in effect until Silfab passes another inspection, which Suskin said “could occur at any time.”

Silfab did not immediately respond to a Charlotte Observer request for comment Thursday morning. A spokesperson told WSOC-TV the company met with York County Wednesday afternoon and is working toward a resolution so they can resume work.

The company’s solar cell manufacturing facility is projected to create 800 new jobs once it opens, but it has garnered significant community push back due to its location next to two new schools slated to open in the next two years.

Critics say Silfab’s location is not appropriate for the types and quantities of chemicals the company will use. Silfab officials ensure their operations are safe.

Despite a community pressure campaign, York County has declined calls to intervene. The county issued a statement last month saying it cannot revoke Silfab’s permits or force the company to cease operations.
