Fort Mill authorities search for killer of man found shot to death in a park

A Chester man was found dead in a Fort Mill park on Thursday night after police responded to calls about gunfire in the area.

Police responded to Steele Street Park a little after 10:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the Fort Mill Police Department. Officers found a man unresponsive, and he was prounced dead at the scene when EMS arrived, according to police.

The York County Coroner’s Office identified the victim of what’s listed as a shooting death on Friday afternoon as Johnny Wayne Martin Cook, 21, of Chester. Autopsy and toxicology will be completed and the death remains under investigation, according to the coroner’s office.

“There is no known identified threat to the community, and the case remains under investigation,” Capt. Steven Bivins with the Fort Mill Police Department said in an email Friday.
