Fort Mill road reopened after chemical spill

A portion of South Sutton Road was shut down for three hours early Tuesday while crews cleaned up a minor chemical spill, according to York County Emergency Management officials.

The spill happened about 4 a.m. on South Sutton Road near Love’s Travel Stop, said Chuck Haynes, director of York County Emergency Management. The incident involved a truck hauling resin – a highly flammable substance. One of the 55-gallon drums was punctured during transport.

Haynes said 30 to 40 gallons of the substance leaked from the drum and had to be cleaned up. Some crew members remained there at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, digging up dirt for environmental remediation.

Riverview Fire Department, Fort Mill Police, the S.C. Highway Patrol and the state Department of Health and Environmental Control responded.
