One of Fort Mill’s busiest parks just got bigger, as town looks beyond baseball
One of Fort Mill’s busiest parks just grew by about half its size, with the town weighing options for what to add there.
The town purchased more than 7 acres adjacent to Doby Bridge Park, just off Fort Mill Parkway on Dobys Bridge Road, for $500,000. Prior to the sale, the park was 14 acres.
It’s heavily used with three baseball or softball fields, both by town recreation leagues and outside tournaments. Doby Bridge Park also has two playgrounds, trails, restrooms and picnic shelters.
The new section is between the existing ball fields and Catawba Ridge Market, the Harris Teeter-anchored shopping center under construction on Fort Mill Parkway.
The town mentioned new offerings at the park associated with the expansion.
“It is critical that we invest in spaces that support healthy lifestyles, outdoor activity and quality of life for families across our community,” Mayor Guynn Savage said in the announcement.
Fort Mill park expansion options
The new property provides flexibility for the town and the park, Town Manager Cary Vargo said in Wednesday’s announcement.
Town Manager Cary Vargo emphasized the flexibility of the site and its potential to serve a wide range of residents.
“Potential uses include a disc golf course and other low-impact recreational amenities that will complement the existing park and provide additional outdoor experiences for residents of all ages,” Vargo said.
The town doesn’t have a development timeline for the new property.
