A 22-year-old Fort Mill man has been identified as the person shot and killed by a York County sheriff’s deputy on Friday.

Allan Josue Topete-Guevara died at the scene on Pine Ridge Court, York County Coroner Sabrina Gast said in a statement Sunday. The shooting happened around 9:20 a.m. in a neighborhood off Lakes Boulevard near U.S. 21 south of Carowinds.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the police shooting, the York County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement released late Friday on its website and on the sheriff’s office social media pages.

The name of the deputy who shot has not been released. The deputy, who was not hurt, is on paid administrative leave according to sheriff’s office policy, the statement said.

Sheriff statement: Man was armed with a knife, charged deputy

Deputies responded to a call about someone who was unconscious and not breathing, the sheriff’s statement said.

The statement did not say who called or why the person was unconscious.

When deputies arrived, the person now identified as Topete-Guevara was no longer unconscious, and was inside a house and armed with a knife, according to the sheriff’s office statement.

Topete-Guevara barricaded himself in a room with a knife and the deputy ordered him to put the knife down and exit the room, the statement said.

According to the sheriff’s office statement, Topete-Guevara “opened the door, refused to put down the knife, and charged at the deputy.” The deputy shot him, according to the statement.

The sheriff’s office said it did not plan to publicly release body camera video of the incident.

A fundraising account that called the death “a tragic and unjust loss” has been set up by Topete-Guevara’s family to help with expenses, including repatriation of the body to Honduras where his mother is currently, the GoFundMe site says.

“His life was taken in a matter of seconds, violently and unexpectedly,” the GoFundMe said. “Allan had his whole life ahead of him, dreams to fulfill, and was deeply loved by his family and all who knew him.”
