A woman who jumped off the bridge that connects Charlotte and South Carolina at Lake Wylie on Friday afternoon has been rescued, officials said.

Police and other emergency responders from York County and Mecklenburg County went to the area around the Buster Boyd Bridge after 4 p.m. responding to calls about a woman in the water after she jumped, said Sgt. Johnathan Gilbert of the York County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office sent its dive team and other units, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg police dispatched a helicopter, according to Gilbert.

Several civilian boaters who were in the area also looked for the woman. One of those boaters pulled the woman from the water, Gilbert said.

The woman was treated by EMS. Her condition has not been released. It remains unclear why she jumped from the bridge span that is part of Highway 49.

Her age and identity have not been released. The investigation remains ongoing.

The stretch of Highway 49 that connects Charlotte commuters with homes in Lake Wylie, Clover and York is one of the busiest roads along the state line, especially at rush hour. However, law enforcement did not block the bridge or the road, and traffic continues to move through the area, Gilbert said.
