One person escapes, but 80-year-old man dies in house fire near Rock Hill

An 80-year-old man died in a house fire near Rock Hill over the Memorial Day weekend, officials said.

Salvatore Noto died at the scene on McAllister Road in Catawba Saturday night, the York County Coroner said.

A second adult, whose age and identity has not been released, made it safely out of the house and was not transported for medical treatment, York County fire officials said through a statement to The Herald from county spokesman Greg Suskin.

The fire at the single story home was reported around 7:15 p.m. and is believed to have started in the primary bedroom, fire officials said. At this point the fire that caused around $40,000 in damage is not believed to be suspicious, officials said.

The fire remains under investigation by the York County Sheriff, coroner, and county fire marshal.
