All races filled as York County election deadline closes

With some races still open as the filing deadline for local elections loomed, it wasn’t clear if York County’s cities and towns would have enough candidates to fill every seat up for election.

But when the deadline passed Friday, every race had a declared candidate, and a few races had more than one.

By midweek, Smyrna was the only one of seven municipalities without a declared candidate for mayor. That changed Wednesday when William C. Faulkner filed as the only candidate for that office.

Voters will have choices on other ballots. Seven candidates each are running for at-large council seats in Clover and Tega Cay. Other local elections this Nov. 3 – in Fort Mill, Hickory Grove, McConnells, Smyrna and York – will have only enough candidates to fill the number of available seats.

Friday was also the deadline for write-in candidates to declare in two Rock Hill City Council elections where the incumbent faces no opposition. Now, Sandra Oborokumo in Ward 1 and Kevin Sutton in Ward 3 will be declared re-elected and voters in those wards won’t even have a race on the ballot on Election Day.

A full list of all candidates can be seen at www.scvotes.org under the “Candidates” tab.
