Driver killed in fiery Chester Co. crash identified

The driver killed in Thursday’s fiery crash on Interstate 77 has been identified, and the Chester County coroner said he died instantly after a tractor trailer crashed head-on into his pickup.

Brian Scott Brown, 38, of Lexington was traveling north on I-77 about 10 a.m. Thursday when, troopers say, the driver of a southbound tractor trailer lost control of the rig, sending it off the left side of the roadway, across the median and into the northbound lanes, where it crashed head-on into Brown’s Dodge Ram. The pickup burst into flames.

“He died immediately from blunt force trauma,” Chester County Coroner Terry Tinker said Friday morning. “He never knew anything about a fire.”

The tractor trailer was contracted with the U.S. Postal Service. The driver’s condition is unknown, and it’s not clear if there will be any charges in the crash, which remains under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The fiery scene shut down a portion of the interstate for six hours Thursday.
