Councilwoman declares write-in campaign for Clover mayor

A town councilwoman has declared a write-in campaign for mayor of Clover this fall.

Debbie “PeeWee” Williams will also appear on the ballot for her town council seat, which is up for re-election at the same time.

Williams filed for re-election with the York County Voter Registration and Elections Office to run for four at-large council seats along with five other candidates, but later declared a write-in candidacy for the mayor’s office as well, running against incumbent Mayor Donnie Grice.

Williams’s decision ensures voters in Clover will have a mayor’s race on the ballot Nov. 3, with the option of voting for Grice or casting a write-in vote. If no candidate had started a write-in campaign, Grice would have been deemed re-elected without having to appear on the ballot at all.

Nothing prevents Williams from running for both mayor and a council seat at the same time, said York County elections director Wanda Hemphill, even if she had filed to have her name listed for both offices.

Attempts to contact Williams were not immediately successful.
