Walmart withdraws plan for liquor store in Rock Hill
Walmart filed plans with the city of Rock Hill last month to bring a liquor store to its Dave Lyle Boulevard location but has since withdrawn the proposal, officials say.
The architect who called to withdraw the plan Friday morning did not say why, city officials told The Herald. The newspaper has not been able to reach a spokesman for the nationwide retailer.
Records on file with the city’s planning department show Walmart had architect drawings for a “special project,” to include some restructuring of its existing grocery area. The plans gave no retail information other than calling the project “Walmart Liquor.”
In some states where laws permit such sales, Walmart sells liquor in its stores. In S.C., retailers cannot sell spirits – only wine and beer – in grocery stores.
State records show Walmart has a beer/wine license to sell some alcohol at its two Supercenter locations in Rock Hill, on Old York Road near Newport and on Dave Lyle Boulevard.
The company recently opened its first Rock Hill Neighborhood Market store on Cherry Road. Other Neighborhood Markets are planned for S.C. 5, near Northwestern High School, and Celanese Road, near Ebinport Road.
Walmart also plans a third Supercenter location in Rock Hill, on Mt. Holly Road, at the intersection of Albright and Saluda roads.
