A soup kitchen that served western York County’s needy until 2014 is reopening next week.
The Grace and Mercy Soup Kitchen will serve hot meals to the needy, elderly, poor and shut-ins Mondays and Wednesdays at Wesley United Methodist Church at 110 W. Jefferson St., York, said Phyllis Moore-Ward, coordinator of the kitchen.
The kitchen will open each Monday and Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Volunteers operated the soup kitchen for many years at the church until mid-2014. But the need in western York County continued so several volunteers from Wesley and other civic and church groups will again open the doors to the community twice a week, with the potential for more days in 2016.
The soup kitchen not only provides a meal, it provides fellowship for people, Moore-Ward said.
Volunteers and donations are needed to operate the soup kitchen. To help, contact Moore-Ward at 803-417-7664; Pam Gilmore at 803-415-6070; or call the church at 803-684-3346.
