Winthrop to support Paris in candlelight vigil in Rock Hill Tuesday
Winthrop University will hold a candlelight vigil Tuesday in Rock Hill in a show of solidarity with Paris, a city rocked by terror attacks on Friday.
Officials believe at least 129 people were killed and more than 350 people wounded during the attacks. The Islamic terror group ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
President Francois Hollande of France has called the attacks an “act of war” and the government raised the country’s security status to the highest possible level over the weekend.
Winthrop’s vigil will be at 5:15 p.m. on the steps of Byrnes Auditorium, which faces Oakland Avenue on campus. The university’s department of world languages and cultures is organizing the event. Professor Scott Shinabargar will led the vigil.
Participants are asked to bring candles. Some candles will be provided by the university.
