Police have taken no action in the case of a 3-year-old boy who shot and killed himself with an unattended weapon on Sunday.

A Rock Hill Police Department spokesman said Wednesday the department will take time in releasing any further information in the death of Sa’Vion Barrow.

“The investigators are allowing the family to grieve their loss at this time,” said Capt. Mark Bollinger.

Detectives determined the gun was legally owned by Sa’Vion’s mother and there were no restrictions on the parents keeping it in the Amelia Avenue home where Sa’Vion was killed, police said Wednesday.

Public details of what happened to the boy have been limited. Sa’Vion apparently got hold of the gun and managed to shoot himself in a home that included at least one other child. A police report on the shooting indicates a 10-year-old girl and at least four adults were in the home at the time of the shooting.

It’s unclear how the gun was stored or what charges may result from its handling.

Last month, a 2-year-old boy was able to get his hands on a loaded gun in the back seat of his great-aunt’s car and shoot his grandmother. The grandmother survived and the great-aunt was charged with unlawful carry of a handgun.

State law requires a gun to be stored in an enclosed compartment while being transported in a car, but in that case the gun was in a flap on the back of the seat in front of the child, who was restrained by a seatbelt and sitting on a pillow.

Sa’Vion’s shooting sparked a strong reaction from the public. On Tuesday, a group called Put Down the Guns Now Young People walked through the neighborhood where the boy died and handed out free gun locks to residents.
