Woman in Chester Co. motorcycle crash dies after 4 months in burn center
A woman badly burned in a fiery motorcycle crash in July on Interstate 77 near Richburg has died.
Teresa Carmen Durrer Miller, 40, died on Nov. 11 at the University of North Carolina’s Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Miller, an Edgemoor resident, was riding on a motorcycle with Joey Huckeba as part of a “unity ride” on Interstate 77 toward Columbia on July 12. Their motorcycle was struck from behind by a car that rolled over the two riders and burst into flames with them pinned underneath it.
Other motorcyclists had to pull them out from under the car and extinguish the flames, some by pouring water bottles on them.
Miller and Huckeba were airlifted from the scene by helicopter, and traffic was backed up for hours as emergency responders tended to the injured. The driver of the car, a 35-year-old man from Huntington, W.Va., was injured and taken by ambulance to Piedmont Medical Center.
Raised in Missouri, Miller was an administrative assistant at Love’s Plaza in Rock Hill. She is survived by her parents, husband, daughter and stepdaughter. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Barron Funeral Home in Chester.
Huckeba remains in the burn center recovering from burns to much of his body. Neither rider was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to S.C. Highway Patrol.
The driver was cited for driving too fast for conditions, but an investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol concluded without any more serious charges being filed against him.
