Rock Hill planning parade for 3 football state champs

“Football City USA” is planning a parade next month to celebrate honor its three state championship football teams.

Players from Northwestern and South Pointe high schools, and the Gray-Y youth all-star team will parade down Rock Hill’s Main Street, from Dave Lyle Boulevard to Fountain Park, where the City Council and the school board plan to honor them.

The parade will be sponsored by the Rock Hill Sports Commission, the city, and the school board.

Mayor Doug Echols said Jan. 11 is the tentative date.

Details are still being worked out, he said, but the parade should feature the schools’ cheerleaders and marching bands. He encouraged spectators to wear their school colors along the parade route.

Other parade participants could include some of the famous alumni from schools in Rock Hill, Echols said.

On Saturday, South Pointe won its second straight 3A title with a 35-0 shutout of Midland Valley. It was the first shutout in the 3A championship game since 1996.

Northwestern followed, winning its fifth 4A championship with a 63-13 win over Lexington. It was the school’s third title since 2010.

That same day, Rock Hill’s Gray-Y youth all-stars beat Florence 20-0 to win their state championship.
