Winthrop gets $2K grant for student service projects on MLK Day

Winthrop University has an extra $2,000 on hand for its annual day of service on Martin Luther King Day.

Winthrop received the grant from the national student community service group Campus Compact and the Corporation for National and Community Service.

The money will be used in the school’s 2016 service projects, specifically in hunger outreach efforts, the university said in a press release Monday.

Since 2000, Winthrop has hosted a coordinated student community service projects on the third Monday in January in honor of the late civil rights leader. To date, 330 students have signed up to “Take a day on, not off” during the federal holiday this Jan. 18, including students from York Technical College and Clinton Junior College.

This year’s projects will include:

  • A global hunger project, organized by Stop Hunger Now. Volunteers will package dehydrated foods for future delivery to communities across the globe.
  • A local hunger project in which the university has partnered with three local churches to prepare and deliver hot meals to people in need.
  • Additional projects will focus on service to senior citizens.
