The rain has mostly passed by, but York, Chester and Lancaster county residents were still on the lookout for high waters heading into the New Year.

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg reported many areas in York County received around three inches of rainfall throughout the day on Wednesday, leading to rising waters and the threat of flooding along many creeks.

Chester and Lancaster counties also reported multiple incidents of flooding over roadways throughout the day Wednesday, although all roads were open midway through Thursday morning.

The Catawba River crested around 14 feet, leading Rock Hill to close River Park as a precaution. Allison Creek topped out at 12 feet Wednesday, and Wildcat Creek near Rock Hill reached 8.5 feet.

Lancaster firefighters had to rescue two women whose car went into standing water and stalled off of Plantation Road Wednesday evening, according to the Lancaster County Fire Service. Van Wyck Road, Hershel Plyler and New Cut Church Road remained closed in Lancaster County due to flood damage.

Area residents weary from more than two weeks of persistent rainfall will welcome the New Year’s Day forecast: cloudy, cooler, with little chance of rain. Friday’s high temperatures are expected to top out in the low to mid 50s, with an evening low near 32.
