Driver cited after tanker truck overturns in Chester County
An overturned fuel truck shut down a portion of Darby Road in Chester County on Monday, according to the Chester County Emergency Management Agency.
The 2015 Freightliner overturned about 9:45 a.m. Monday on Darby Road about two miles south of Lowrys, according to Lance Cpl. Gary Miller of the S.C. Highway Patrol. The southbound truck went off the right side of the roadway and the driver over-corrected, causing the truck to go off the left side of the road and overturn.
The 56-year-old driver, who was wearing a seat belt, had minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, Miller said. He was later cited for driving too fast for conditions.
Emergency responders told dispatch the truck was carrying diesel fuel in two compartments and gasoline in three.
Crews pumped the remaining fuel from the overturned truck into another truck, according to Ed Darby, a spokesman for Chester County Emergency Management Agency. The tank on the Freightliner wasn’t penetrated, but the caps on top of the tank became loose when the truck overturned.
“It leaked a small quantity of fuel,” Darby said Monday afternoon. “Everything’s getting back to normal. They’re getting the road reopened.”
Crews were able to stop the truck from leaking, and hazmat crews responded for cleanup, Darby said. Emergency responders told dispatch the driver had gotten out of the truck but was injured.
