Rock Hill football champions to parade Monday

Rock Hill will honor its championship football teams Monday with a downtown Main Street parade.

At 4:30 p.m. players from Northwestern, South Pointe and the youth Gray-Y All-Stars will walk from the Main Street-Dave Lyle Boulevard intersection to Fountain Park, where the City Council and school board will honor them.

Mychal Frost, spokesman for Rock Hill schools, said the parade also will feature the schools’ cheerleaders and marching bands.

Mayor Doug Echols is encouraging spectators to wear their school colors along the parade route.

South Pointe won its state title with a 35-0 shutout of Midland Valley on Dec. 12 in Columbia. It was the first shutout in the 3A championship game since 1996 when Berkeley blanked Darlington, 21-0.

Northwestern followed, with a 63-13 win over Lexington. It was the school’s third title since 2010.

The Gray-Y All-Stars beat Florence 20-0 to win their youth football championship.

After Monday’s parade, area football fans will turn their attention to the television. That night top-ranked Clemson plays Alabama for the national college football championship in Phoenix. Game time is 8:30 p.m., on ESPN.

For the parade the following streets are closed:

Main Street from Dave Lyle Bloulevard to Hampton Street will close at 2 p.m. for event staging. Main Street from Hampton Street to Elizabeth Lane will close at 4:15 p. m.   Roads will reopen when safely cleared after the event.

Elizabeth Lane from Main St. to Black Street will close at 3 PM for event staging.  Saluda St. will be closed all day from Main St. to Black St.  Black St. from Saluda St. to Elizabeth Ln. will close from approximately 4:15 PM – 4:30 PM.  Roads will reopen when safely cleared after the event.

A section of the municipal parking lot between White Street and Main Street will be closed all day on Monday event staging. 

On-street parking on Main Street from Dave Lyle Boulevard to Elizabeth Lane and surrounding Fountain Park will be closed all day on Monday.
