Rock Hill championship football teams on parade

Hundreds of supporters packed downtown Rock Hill on Monday for a celebration of the state championship South Pointe and Northwestern, high school football teams, as well a state champion Rock Hill YMCA all-star football team.

Streamers were shot over East Main Street as a “Football City” parade featuring the three teams, school marching bands and cheerleaders marched from the Wells Fargo parking lot to Fountain Park.

The teams and their coaches were honored with plaques given by Mayor Doug Echols and remarks by Rock Hill schools Superintendent Kelly Pew, school board chair Jim Vining and others.

South Pointe won its second straight state title with a 35-0 shutout of Midland Valley on Dec. 12 in Columbia. It was the first shutout in the 3A championship game since 1996 when Berkeley blanked Darlington, 21-0.

Northwestern followed on Dec. 12 with a 63-13 win over Lexington at Williams-Brice Stadium. It was the school’s third title since 2010.

That same day in Columbia, Rock Hill’s Gray-Y all-star team beat Florence 20-0 to win a youth football state championship.
