Funeral Friday for Catawba Assistant Chief Wayne George

The funeral for Catawba Indian Nation Assistant Chief Roger “Wayne” George, who died last week at age 67, is set for Friday at noon at the Mormon church at the tribe’s York County reservation.

Burial after the funeral will include full military and tribal ceremonies. George was a decorated Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Whitesell Funeral Home in Rock Hill.

George was assistant chief for the Catawba since 2011, winning re-election in 2015. No date has been set for selecting a successor. The Catawba are South Carolina’s only federally recognized tribe.
