2 teens killed after single-car crash in western York County
Two teenagers were killed after an SUV struck a fence and a tree in western York County on Friday afternoon, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The crash happened about 12:45 p.m. on Irene Bridge Highway at Wilkerson Road in Hickory Grove, according to Lance Cpl. Gary Miller. A 2006 Ford Explorer with four people inside was traveling south on Irene Bridge Highway. It went off the left side of the roadway and struck a fence and a tree.
Dominick Galosi, 17, and Shemar Byers, 18, both of Gaffney, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to York County Coroner Sabrina Gast. Autopsies are expected Saturday.
Troopers said one of the decedents was sitting in the front passenger seat and the other was in the back seat. It’s not clear where in the SUV Galosi and Byers were sitting.
The driver, a 17-year-old Gaffney man, had to be extricated, Miller said. He was taken by helicopter to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where his condition was unknown Friday evening.
An 18-year-old passenger in the back seat was taken to the same Spartanburg hospital by helicopter, Miller said. She was not wearing a seat belt but was not ejected or entrapped. Her condition was unknown.
It’s not clear what charges, if any, will be filed. The case remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
