‘Wintry mix’ could hit York, Chester, Lancaster on Monday

A winter storm moving through York, Chester and Lancaster counties early next week likely will bring a mix of wintry precipitation with it, according to the National Weather Service.

The system will move into South Carolina from the west, strengthening as it approaches the state, said Chris Horne, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Greer. It’s still too early to tell what kind of precipitation York, Chester and Lancaster counties will see.

“It’s more likely at this point to be some kind of wintry mix,” Horne said. “There’s still a lot of time to get the details hammered out with this system. Some kind of storm will be affecting (the three counties) sometime Monday.”

The area can expect at least a half-inch to three-quarters of an inch of wintry precipitation, Horne said, which could be snow, sleet, rain or freezing rain.

“How much of it falls as snow, sleet or freezing rain is way too early to tell at this point,” he said.

High temperatures will be in the mid 40s Thursday and Friday, and get progressively colder through the weekend, Horne said. Lows are expected to plunge into the upper teens Saturday night and Sunday morning, with highs hovering in the mid 30s Sunday and Monday.

The system should be clearing out by Tuesday, he said, and highs are expected to climb back into the 50s by Wednesday.

“Certainly, the devil’s in the details with this type of storm,” he said. “We’ll be refining our forecast over the next couple of days.”
