11 Springs Farm workers displaced after fire breaks out at Fort Mill housing unit

Nearly a dozen people were displaced after a fire roared through a Fort Mill housing unit Thursday afternoon, officials said.

The blaze was reported just after 2 p.m. at a two-story home on the 2500 block of Coltharp Road, fire officials said. No one was inside at the time and no injuries were reported.

The fire broke out in a housing unit for agricultural workers at Springs Farm, manager Ron Edwards said. The building can house up to 30 people, but only 11 were living there at the time.

Edwards said the building is a total loss. The workers will be housed in motel rooms, and after a dinner out Thursday night, Edwards said they planned to make a trip to Walmart to get everyone clothes and hygiene products.

“Whatever they need, that’s what we’re gonna do,” he said.

It’s not clear what sparked the blaze, but Edwards said it likely started in the kitchen area of the building. The employees had just left from lunch to go back to work when the fire started.

Firefighters from departments in Fort Mill and nearby departments were on hand to contain the flames.
