Man struck, killed walking in road near Rock Hill identified
Authorities have identified the pedestrian who was struck by a car and killed while walking in the roadway Tuesday night.
Johnny Markham Swails, 53, was reportedly walking west in the eastbound lane of U.S. 21 when he was struck by a car coming the opposite direction.
The York County Coroner’s Office said they could not locate a current address for Swails. A post-mortem examination and toxicology tests were to be conducted late Wednesday.
The collision occurred around 6:45 p.m. on U.S. 21 near Marine Drive, just west of the Interstate 77 overpass, according to S.C. Highway Patrol.
A 51-year-old Lancaster man was driving east on U.S. 21/S. Anderson Road at 6:45 p.m. when his 2015 Nissan four-door struck Swails, who was reportedly walking west in the eastbound lane.
Swails was pronounced dead at the scene.
