Driver, 82, killed in Chester County crash

staff reports, The Herald

One person was killed in a Tuesday crash in Chester County just south of the York County line.

The fatal wreck was reported just before 3 p.m. Tuesday on Augusta Road at Catawba River Road, about 6 miles north of Fort Lawn, according to Lance Cpl. Gary Miller of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The 2004 Ford sedan was traveling south on Augusta Road when the vehicle went off the left side of the roadway, Miller said. The driver over-corrected, causing the car to go off the right side of the roadway, where it hit a tree.

The driver, 82-year-old Henry Allen Jr., of Catawba, died on impact from blunt force trauma, according to Chester County Coroner Terry Tinker. Allen was wearing a seat belt but the air bags did not deploy when the car hit the tree, Tinker said.

An autopsy will not be performed, Tinker said. This is the seventh fatal crash to happen on Chester County roadways in 2016.
