Traffic patterns are changing during construction of a roundabout west of downtown Rock Hill.

Starting Monday, Columbia Avenue will be closed to traffic between Constitution Boulevard and the driveway of Fourman’s Repair Shop. The road, which ferries traffic between Constitution and Alumni Drive on the Winthrop University campus, will be closed until construction of a new traffic circle is complete.

West White Street, which currently ends on Columbia, has been closed to through traffic since last week. Traffic on both West White and Columbia will circulate around the traffic circle onto Constitution once it’s complete.

During construction, Constitution will be periodically narrowed to two lanes – including Friday, when construction materials will be unloaded ahead of Monday’s street closure – but city officials plan to keep one lane of traffic open in both directions throughout the project.

When the roundabout opens to traffic later this year, it will be topped by a work of art currently under design by students at Winthrop’s College of Visual and Performing Arts.
