National sports editors’ group cites Herald’s McCormick for outstanding digital storytelling

Bret McCormick, assistant sports editor of The Herald, has been recognized for outstanding multimedia sports reporting by a national panel of sports journalists.

The Associated Press Sports Editors announced Wednesday that McCormick placed second in the multimedia category of its annual contest for news organizations under 30,000 circulation.

McCormick’s entry – South Pointe shooting for back-to-back state titles – was an interactive graphic about the school’s attempt to win a second straight high school football state championship.

Matt L. Stephens and Eric Larsen of the Fort Collins Coloradoan took first place in the contest, and Ryan Holmgren, of the Casper (Wyo.) Star-Tribune, placed third.

Winners will be recognized during an awards dinner at the conclusion of the APSE Conference next month in Charlotte.

APSE is a national organization that strives to improve professional standards for the sports departments of professional news organizations and to recognize professional excellence among its membership.

Sports editors in the under-30,000 category submitted 12 multimedia entries as part of the competition, which is open to APSE members. Entries are judged by secret ballot, without any identifying information about the writer or news organization.

McCormick, a Charlotte native who covers high school and collegiate athletics, has been with The Herald since July 2012 and has been assistant sports editor since January 2014.
