Emily’s House Rock Hill homeless shelter holding barbecue fundraiser

The homeless shelter created as a legacy for a Rock Hill teen who died from cancer is holding a barbecue fundraiser Friday and Saturday to keep helping the poorest among us.

Emily’s House on Hasty Street, named for the late Emily Elkins, is almost complete a year after Emily died in March 2015 at age 16.

Emily was widely known for her courage and giving after a donation jar for her cancer treament was stolen in 2012. Rather than becoming upset, Emily devoted her short life to helping others, raising tens of thousands of dollars for the homeless, the poor, needy children and others.

Her selflessness became a national story of forgiveness and hope. Her last wish was to open a homeless shelter for year-round assistance for families – especially children who were homeless. A group of volunteers worked for months to find a building and handle remodeling and repairs.

Barbecue fundraiser plates are $10 with all proceeds going to the nonprofit Emily’s House.

Business deliveries are Friday for orders of five or more. The fundraiser continues Saturday at Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene, 998 Dunlap Roddey Road, Rock Hill.

Pre-orders are accepted. To order or for information call 803-328-2134, or go to emmanuelnazarene.org.
