York community meeting Thursday to talk about safe summer for kids, teens
Community, civic and school leaders in York are holding a community meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday to bring people together to talk about the upcoming summer and safety as children leave school for the year.
The event, which will take place at the McCelvey Center, will include religious leaders, York Mayor Eddie Lee, representatives from the police department and school district, and others who want summer to be safe and productive for kids, said Steve Love, one of the organizers.
The goal is to make sure problems that have happened in other communities – which sometimes become more common in the summer when children are off from school – don’t happen in York.
Topics include talks about summer events for youth, a “We the People” talk of how residents can get more involved with the community, crime in neighborhoods and how residents can work together with law enforcement and others to ensure safe streets.
York has taken a proactive approach toward responding to the community’s concerns for years, including a large National Night Out event in August during which police, city and county officials, and concerned residents brought together hundreds of people for a common purpose.
The McCelvey Center is at 212 E. Jefferson St., York. For information, call 803-389-9907 or 704-685-5177.
